Challenges
Public Health Concern
Diarrhoea remains a significant issue, especially in regions with limited medical facilities.
Diagnostic Challenge
Quickly differentiating between bacterial and viral diarrhoea at the point-of-care is challenging.
Antibiotic Resistance
Irrational use of antibiotics without confirmed diagnosis of viral or bacterial cause of diarrhoea contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.
Inadequate Diagnostic Methods
Current methods often fail to provide rapid and accurate results in resource-limited settings.
Experience-Based Treatment
Available treatments are often based on experience rather than evidence, leading to potential
mismanagement.
Introduction
CoLOSENS is an innovative, affordable, and efficient colorimetric diagnostic instrument for detecting the bacterial cause of diarrhoea in the peripheral settings. The product aligns with the S2M’s objective to empower healthcare providers and patients with advanced medical solutions along with providing high quality of life for both urban and rural populations.
Product
‘CoLOSENS’ is the outcome of the project "CoLOSENS: An Affordable Colorimetric Diagnostic Instrument and Field Validation at Imphal, North-East India”, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. It is a high-throughput, portable, miniaturized device that integrates stabilized bio-receptors for cost-effective diarrhoea prognosis, providing real-time results.
Features
Cost-Effective Diagnostics: Reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics by accurately diagnosing bacterial causes of diarrhea.
Portable and User-Friendly: Designed for ease of use in diverse settings, from urban to rural health centers.
Rapid Results: Obtain diagnostic results in just 15 minutes, allowing for timely medical intervention.
Power Independent: Operates with an external power bank, ideal for locations with unreliable power sources.
Data Analysis: Analyze data patterns from different locations to make informed decisions about patients.
Technology
CoLOSENS is designed for high-throughput, field-portable applications, making it ideal for widespread use in diverse environments.
The device detects bacterial loads at a disease-causing limit of 10^6 CFU/mL in stool samples, ensuring accurate diagnosis.
Real-time data monitoring through a mobile dashboard application allows for remote diagnostics and multiple location monitoring.
It was successfully field-tested at the Institute of Child Health (ICH), Kolkata, and RIMS, Imphal, and extensive trials confirmed its efficacy and reliability.
